Prophet Sadhu Sundar Selvaraj explains the mystery connecting the Prophet John The Baptist with the Prophet Elijah. Now the pre requisite to understand this would be the timelines of the two saints - the time when they were born and when they did their ministry and their death. Firstly, somewhere around 850 BC Elijah the Prophet faces a stand off with the evil adulterous (character of Herodias) and idol loving (false Gods) woman - Jezebel, the foreign woman that the king of Israel, Ahab had married. The false prophets of Baal were completely destroyed by Elijah and his men - because the false prophets made men and women to sin against the God of Israel - eventually Elijah brings down fire from Mount Carmel, to prove to all the people that the God of Israel is the only true God and mocks the idols and other demons that people worship who were unable to bring down fire (1 Kings 18). Now to avenege the death of Jezebel's false prophets - Jezebel intends to kill Elijah by sending him a warning message that by tomorrow his fate would also be the same (beheading) But Elijah is intimiated by the warning of Jezebel and fear strikes him and he runs for his life away from her and begs God to take him home - instead of confronting her. Soon, Elijah was raptured out of the earth but his ministry remained incomplete - which was continued by Elisha - you will observe that in 2:47. But the warning given by Jezebel is still in the hunt to claim the prophetic image remnant on the earth - a person symbolized like Elijah the Prophet. This is the reason the Jesus spoke these verses.. But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him whatever they wished. In the same way, the Son of Man will suffer at their hands - Matthew 17:12 Now the Spirit of Jezebel that intended to kill Elijah is inflicted upon John the Baptist, the prophet who prophesied that Jesus is the Lamb of God, something that people did not know before the death of Jesus. Now the wife of Herod, Herodias is having an adulterous relationship with the king while being married to his brother Philip. Somehow, John the Baptist knows this and warns king Herod about the adulterous affair unlawful in the eyes of God. This triggers Herodias and the Spirit of Jezebel takes form upon her and she deceives on of her daughters to ask for the head of John the Baptist exactly like how Jezebel herself decieved Ahab to pollute the land with evil. Hence the spirit of Jezebel comes upon Herodias and the spirit of Elijah comes upon the Prophet John the Baptist and kills him - what was intended to Elijah. This is the reason why Jesus said.. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear - Matthew 11:15 and went on to say... But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him whatever they wished.
